Calling all non-profits!

I’m looking for non-profits to work with on a few different fronts. Why? Well simply because photography and art can be a powerful medium for promoting a worthy cause, and I like to support worthy causes as much as possible.

First, if you would like to partner up for fund raising, I have generous percentage based revenue sharing available for all of my fine art work.

Second, I am prepared to create new work to help promote your cause. In this scenario, the work would be more of the fine art approach, taking inspiration and motivation from your cause.

And third, if you need promotional imagery, I can work pro-bono (or near pro-bono, depending on the scope) to create photos that tell your organization’s story and creates a call to action for your audience.

What kinds of causes are most likely to peak my interest? The short list includes children, environmental, medical research, and national interest. But really, I’ll consider any non-profit that benefits a worthy cause. Faith based insterests will be considered so long as the mission is not evangelism.

To take advantage of any of these offers, please go here to contact me at your earliest convenience:

Buy Some Art - Build a School!

Hello Friends!
I’d like to bring to your attention a very worthwhile cause - this
Friday, the 21st, there will be a silent auction for the African Sky
organization. African Sky is an organization dedicated to helping the
people of Mali, and this silent auction will raise funds to build 10
new schools for the people of Mali.

Details and location of the event can be found here:
http://www.africansky.org/silent_auction.htm

There is normally a $25 ticket price to enter, but if you ask for Ron
Lacy at the door, and tell him that I sent you, you can get in for
free!

Art that is being auctioned at the even has been donated by the
artists themselves. And if you’ve ever wanted one of my Broken Still
Life prints, now’s your chance - there will be a full set available at
the auction. 100% of the auction price will go towards the African
Sky organization’s efforts to build these schools. If you haven’t
seen my Broken Still Life’s yet, they can be viewed here:
http://www.kierselinsky.com/displayimage2.asp?Gallery=bsl&image=17

I unfortunately won’t be able to attend as I have a prior commitment,
but don’t let that stop you - and tell your friends!

More about African Sky, including links to their annual report (so
that you may check legitimacy), can be found here:

What are those Broken Still Life photos?

I’ve been asked this a LOT. So I’ll provide a bit of an explanation…

The Broken Still Life series is, in essence, my attempt at reinterpreting some every day objects in our lives. Is there a meaning, method, or madness in how I go about it? No, not necessarily. It’s a few things squashed into one (as evidenced by the outcome of the photos).

First, I naturally tend to study the lines, shades, and presence of an individual object, rather than take in the full surroundings. If you and I were to walk down an aisle of a hardware store, you might be taking in everything around you, whereas I’ll fixate on one dazzling bolt after another. If you fixate on little details like bolts also, congrats - you’re just as whacked in the head as I :)

Second, it’s jealousy of 3D artists. Yeah, that’s right, I’m a little jealous. 3D artists such as sculptors inherently get to play with how your eye fixates on something. Traditionally, photographers don’t get to play as much in that way because we are photographing existing objects, and in that realm, liquid doesn’t flow out of the bottom of a bottle. Digital gives me the power to play with perspective and context the same way a 3D artist gets to.

And third, it’s an opportunity to challenge myself creatively. How sparingly can I cut down a piano and still capture the essence of a piano? What elements communicate the experience of swinging? How can I interpret the wholeness of a good book? These are the kinds of questions I try to ask myself as I create these images, and I hope that the results answer them.

What’s to come…

I’m going to ramble off some things here that are in the works, just in case you’re curious…

More Broken Still Life’s. So far, this series has been very rewarding for it’s exploratory exercises, and I plan on making at least 20 of them as time goes on, if not more.

The real kick-off of Feel the Wind, ALS and Denny Parsons (working title). Denny is Akron native who was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) a little over a year ago. I will be documenting his struggle with this disease in the months to come.

Continuing to build on my Man Made and Nature portfolios, as I come across subjects.

I hope to be setting up a new darkroom and performing a bit of a return to my analog roots. Those of you who’ve known me for some time know that I started this whole obsession in the darkroom. Quite frankly, digital is fun, but for a number of reasons I miss the darkroom. I don’t think one is better than the other, and I won’t be dropping digital, but there are certain things that only the darkroom can do right. Along with getting into the darkroom more, I’ll be branching out into some alternative processes such as pinhole, bromoils, gum bichromates, vandykes, and the like.

Well, cheers for now!

Kier Selinsky Photography Announces the Summers are for Children Campaign

Summers are for Children!
Kier Selinsky Photography is proud to announce the Summers are for Children campaign!  From June 1 through August 31 2007, 25% of all portraiture sales before sales tax will go towards the Akron Children’s Hospital Children’s Miracle Network Foundation.  This is not a "net proceeds" fundraising campaign - the 25% contribution to the foundation goes before any materials or labor costs are taken!  Here’s how it works:

  1. Contact us to set up your portraiture session between June 1 and August 31 2007
  2. Have a fun and gratifying portraiture session with Kier Selinsky
  3. Order any prints between June 1 and August 31 2007
  4. Receive your personalized piece of artwork, and the satisfaction of knowing that you helped a very good cause.

At the end of the campaign, we’ll be putting up a page on www.kierselinsky.com listing how much money was raised, and who all the contributors were.

Take that first step:

  1. Contact us to request information
  2. Go to the main portraiture page
  3. Go to the portraiture gallery

Or learn more…

Click here to learn more about the purpose of Akron Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Miracle Network. We are confident that after learning about this program, you’ll understand why we have chosen to support it.

FAQ’s:

I’m still not clear on how much is donated, could I have an example?

It’s 25% of the total order before taxes, so if your total order with the session fee and prints is $400 before taxes, then $100 would go to the foundation.

Have prices been raised in order to accommodate the 25% donation?

No way! We see this as a partnership between Kier Selinsky Photography and you, the customer.  Standard pricing is still in place, and we’re taking the loss on labor and materials to help raise this money for the foundation.

How much of this is tax deductible?

25% of your total spent with Kier Selinsky Photography will be considered tax deductible.

Have you received permission from Akron Children’s Hospital to promote this campaign?

Yes, absolutely. All proper channels have been followed and permission has been received for this campaign.

If my friends and family order prints during this campaign, will 25% of those orders contribute also?

Abosolutely!!

Take that first step:

  1. Contact us to request information
  2. Go to the main portraiture page
  3. Go to the portraiture gallery
